Jasper in Deadland

Based on the story of Orpheus & Eurydice, Jasper in Deadland tells the story of 16-year-old Jasper, who journeys into the Afterlife to rescue his recently deceased best friend, Agnes. But in this version of the hereafter – known as “Deadland,” a hybrid of mythology, religion, and superstition – the dead forget Life… And so, too, will Jasper, if he can’t get past the seven circles of Deadland, fearsome Cerberus, heavenly Beatrix, mysterious Mr. Lethe, and ultimately himself. Can Jasper bring his best friend back from the dead, or will he join the dead forever?
CHARACTERS
Jasper (m) – Tenor
An adolescent boy who feels like he is really screwing up life. Doesn’t want to admit it, but is in love with his best friend, Agnes.

Gretchen (F) – Mezzo-Belt
Tour guide girl of Deadland for the newly deceased. Plays ukulele to help get tips for her tour. Decides to follow Jasper on his journey because she is drawn to him and his quest.

Mr Lethe (m) – Bari-tenor/character voice
The businessman of the Underworld. Has built his business, money, and influence in Deadland. The living soul, Jasper, is challenging what he has built and his plans to take over Deadland…
