Awards Available: 1

Yates and Wheland is pleased to offer the 2023 Family Adversity Scholarship to recognize students who have been through hardships with their families. As lawyers, we have served many individuals who have been in hard situations, and we know how stressful it can be during those times. We admire people who are able to learn and improve when faced with struggles. That’s why we are offering the Family Adversity Scholarship to recognize students who have been through hard times with their families and have come out the other side a better person.

Our firm is offering this $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior, college student or graduate student who can articulate how the struggle they faced has impacted them. Applicants must be either currently pursuing a higher education at a two to five year post-secondary institution or must be doing so in the following semester. Applicants must also meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • The scholarship is open to any current high school senior, college student or graduate student who is a legal resident of the United States and who is enrolled in a two to five year post-secondary institution for the 2023 fall semester.
  • Employees of Yates and Wheland, their immediate families, and persons living in the same households of such individuals (whether related or not), are not eligible to apply for the scholarship.
  • Candidates for this scholarship should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be in good academic standing at their current school.

Application Requirements

  • Applicants must submit a 750-word response to the prompt: Discuss a time in your life when you and your family had to work through a tough scenario and how did that make an impact on your life going forward. What were you able to learn and how are you now able to help others going through similar situations?
  • Applicants must submit a professional resumé with their essay that lists their academic, professional, and volunteer experience.
  • Applicants must submit an official transcript from their current school. Transfer students or first-year students may submit an unofficial transcript from their current school, in addition to their most recent official transcript from their prior school.
