These are high molecular weight proteins, heavily glycosylated and produced by epithelial tissues in most animals. They are the primary macromolecular components of mucus, each having a unique sequence of tandemly repeating amino acids rich in serine. Their primary function is to protect the epithelial cells in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts.
