As your constituent, I'm asking you to pass SB 1966, a bill that would fix the Illinois FOID card system and help keep guns away from people who cannot pass a criminal background check. The Illinois House took action last year on this important bill, but the Senate has refused.
SB 1966 would strengthen our gun safety laws in several ways. First, it would require a point-of-sale background check for all unlicensed gun sales — which are associated with lower firearm homicide rates, lower firearm suicide rates, and lower firearm trafficking. The bill would also reduce the FOID Card duration from 10 years to 5 years and require action by law enforcement to remove guns from a prohibited person once their FOID Card is revoked.
SB 1966 would address many of the gaps in the current law that enable day to day gun violence in our state.
