HOLLYWOOD BACKUP SINGERS was recorded with a collection of vintage tube microphones in world famous EastWest Studio 3, home to some of the most iconic hits from the 1960s till the present day, including the Beach Boys masterpiece Pet Sounds, Mamas and Papas, Blondie, through to modern day productions from Ariana Grande, Frank Ocean, and Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s Grammy and Academy Award-winning “A Star Is Born” soundtrack.

Legendary Backup Singers

Each of the amazingly talented singers recorded for HOLLYWOOD BACKUP SINGERS come from a rich musical background, having performed with the biggest names in the industry. Durga McBroom and Lorelei McBroom toured with Pink Floyd as backup singers for many years. C.C. White has worked with many iconic artists. She is also the star vocalist of EastWest’s blockbuster product Voices of Soul, one of the top selling vocal products ever produced.

HOLLYWOOD BACKUP SINGERS features vocals across a variety of categories:

• Vowels includes regular and expressive vowel instruments, and sustain expressive vowel instruments (which is a combination of the two vowel types). The expressive vowels also have ‘LES’ versions, which contain additional samples of the vocals recorded through a Leslie speaker cabinet, something Pink Floyd did on many backing vocal tracks. Each instrument is programmed to cross-fade between multiple dynamic layers using the Mod Wheel (CC1).
• Consonants includes pitched and un-pitched consonant instruments. Each are programmed to cross-fade between multiple dynamic layers using the Mod Wheel (CC1).
• Combo MOD includes a variety of instruments that use the Mod Wheel (CC1) to switch between multiple layers of regular and expressive vowel types, or in the case of the ‘Xfde’ sub-folder, use the Mod Wheel (CC1) to cross-fade between these layers. The expressive vowels also have ‘LES’ versions, which contain additional samples of the vocals recorded through a Leslie speaker cabinet.
• Solo Phrases includes instruments that feature solo phrases and sub-phrases that were recorded in multiple root note positions for use in a variety of keys and modes. There are ‘LES’ versions available, which contain additional samples of the vocals recorded through a Leslie speaker cabinet. Each vocalist was recorded as a soloist, whereas the rest of the collection features the 3 vocalists recorded together.
• Keyswitch includes instruments that combine multiple articulations into a single instrument that uses blue-colored keyswitches to activate a given articulation. There are keyswitch instruments available for vowels, consonants, and solo phrases, including ‘LES’ versions where available.
• WB Multi contains a specially designed multi-instrument that is pre-configured for use with WordBuilder. Simply load the WB Multi containing all the necessary phonetic sounds required to build words, type a phrase in the Text Editor (or choose from over 220 phrase and word presets) and the backup singers will sing the words.

EASTWEST is excited to announce the release of HOLLYWOOD POP BRASS, your new go-to product when you need a tight, bombastic, and dynamic brass section to make your next track pop, sizzle, and soar.

For this project, producers DOUG ROGERS and NICK PHOENIX recorded one of the top horn sections in the industry in EastWest’s famous Hollywood studios, and brought in multiple Grammy award-winning engineer MOOGIE CANAZIO to craft a sound that’s larger than life.

MOOGIE CANAZIO has recorded music icons Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, Sergio Mendes, Diana Ross, Luis Miguel, Michael Buble, Melody Gardot, and many more. He’s been nominated for over 35 Grammy nominations and has won 7 Grammys and Latin Grammys.

HOLLYWOOD POP BRASS features a 4-piece brass ensemble for all multi-sampled articulations that includes 2 trumpets, a trombone, and a saxophone that alternates between a baritone, tenor, and alto saxophone depending on the note range; and a 5-piece ensemble for all phrases and licks that includes 2 trumpets, a trombone and 2 saxophones that alternate between a baritone, tenor, and alto saxophone depending on the instrument voicing.

It includes incredible sounding multi-sampled ensemble sections recorded in the famous Studio 1 at EastWest Studios (“the best brass recording room in the world” according to Michael Jackson engineer Bruce Swedien) as well as stylized phrases and licks in multiple keys recorded in Studio 2, a favorite of many Latin artists going all the way back to Tijuana Brass by Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. These phrases will simply blow you away with how easily they slide right into your track, and cover many genres from pure pop to rock, funk, soul, and many distinctive rhythms and melodies from the Latin world.

The great thing about this library is that there’s something for everyone – whether you want to build deep and detailed compositions with one of the world’s top horn sections, or if you just want to “plug and play” using licks and phrases that will inspire you and bring that “it” factor to your song. HOLLYWOOD POP BRASS includes the articulations listed below. Most include multiple dynamic layers, up to 8 round robin sample alternatives, and a variety of instrument programming options to accommodate a variety of playing styles.

• Sustain: Contains different types of sustained articulations: fast, medium and long crescendos, sustain accent, crescendo and diminuendo, and “xfde” versions of instruments that use Mod Wheel (CC1) to cross-fade between dynamics. Each contain 2 dynamic layers, and use Expression (CC 11) to control loudness.
• Short: Contains a variety of articulations that have a short duration, including marcato, stabs, staccato, and staccato repetitions. Each include round robin variations, use velocity-sensitivity to control dynamics and Expression (CC 11) to control overall loudness.
• Effects: Contains instruments that feature special articulation techniques like falls and rips in various durations, as well as growls and trills. All but growls contain multiple round robin variations.
• Legato: Contains an instrument that will playback true legato intervals when two notes are played in a connected fashion (legato), for every interval up to and including an octave in either direction. When playing disconnected (non-legato), a sustain layer will playback.
• MOD Combo: Contains instruments that combine multiple articulations and uses the Mod Wheel (CC 1) to select between them. A ‘VS’ (velocity-sensitive) instrument named HPB Shorts VS MOD.ewi alternatively uses velocity to select between articulations and Mod Wheel (CC 1) to determine dynamics.
• Phrases: Contains instruments that feature phrases and sub-phrases in various tempos that fit perfectly in the world of pop brass. Each was recorded with multiple transpositions, and are mapped across the virtual keyboard on their respective root note positions for use in a variety of key signatures.
• Licks: Contains instruments that feature short licks (or “motifs”) performed at 120 bpm that fall into 1 of 6 chord types. The position of the Mod Wheel de- termines which of the chord types will playback. Each lick has 2 round robin variations and is mapped to the key that corresponds to the respective root note position of each chord type.
• Keyswitch: Keyswitch contains instruments that combine multiple articulations into a single instrument and uses keyswitches to activate the desired articulation.

Fab Four

FAB FOUR is a virtual instrument inspired by the sounds of the Beatles, using the same kind of period instruments and authentic rare EMI recording equipment the Beatles used to create their music.

FAB FOUR sound engineer KEN SCOTT worked on five Beatles albums, including “A Hard Days Night”, “Help”, “Rubber Soul”, “Magical Mystery Tour” (engineer), and “The Beatles” (engineer) – also known as the “White Album”. Drummer DENNY SEIWELL and Guitarist LAURENCE JUBER were both members of Paul McCartney and Wings.

No expense was spared finding the same kind of period instruments and rare authentic EMI and other recording equipment the Beatles used to create their sounds to produce this collection, much of which, ironically, will end up in EASTWEST Studios, where the Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” was recorded, the inspiration for the Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, according to Paul McCartney.

Well over a million dollars worth of instruments, amplifiers, microphones, recording desks (including very rare EMI REDD tube and TG12345 desks), outboard equipment (including Fairchild limiters and EMI RS124 modified Altec compressors), and Studer J-37 tube multi-tracks were used in this production.

If you are a film/tv/game composer, or a musician/producer looking for sounds not found in other collections, this is it. Blending these unique and sometimes bizarre sounds with today’s music should enable you to produce something truly fab!

Generally, all info related to the reverb selected is displayed in the interface window of SPACES II.

• M-S: means mono in and stereo out. So normal stereo reverb, where the input is summed to mono before being processed.
• S-S: means stereo in and stereo out. So true stereo. Each channel L and R is processed with its own unique stereo impulse.
• FR: means front mics.
• RR: means rear mics. These can be used to create a surround mix, or to pick a reverb that you like. Generally the rear is longer and darker.
• FILTER: This allows users to limit the frequencies sent to the reverb, you can high-pass, low-pass, or both. When selected, a frequency response graphic will appear in the center window.

Recording for “Hollywood Strings Gold” took place at the famous EASTWEST STUDIO 1, the same studio where many Hollywood soundtracks and television themes were recorded with a live orchestra.

Ministry Of Rock 2 was put together with one goal in mind: to create a virtual (software) instrument capable of producing sounds that could actually produce a hit record or film score without any live drum, bass, or guitar overdubs. • Big Drums: These are the larger drums that do not fall in the Taiko family. Many of them include large, deep and booming sounds, but others are more complex in nature. There are some real gems in here from Mickey’s magical warehouse of one of a kind hand drums. Highlights in the epic genre here are The Beast, Double Headed Tree Drum, Lord Of Toms Ensemble and Dragon Ensemble.
• Gongs Clocks Waterphones: These instruments provide the iconic sounds of several gongs and waterphones, some played underwater! The “Clockworks” patches are the result of Nicks field recordings in 6 antique clock shops.
• Metals: This group includes bells, deep bowls, chimes, and cymbals collected by Mickey on his world travels. Some are well known like the Brazilian berimbau (which is played on a metal wire), others are unusual, such as hammered copper pots and handmade doorstop drums.
• Shakers: The instruments in this group include several made from naturally occurring objects, such as snake rattles, seed pods, and deer hoofs, in addition to the more common ganza, modern shakers and Mickeys mighty rainsticks. Playability here is key.
• Small Drums: Here you’ll find a very large collection of smaller drums. Some have names you’re probably familiar with, such as bongos, frame drums, and tambourines. But there are so many others that will surprise and delight you. Many of the Indian drums in this category are particularly special, such as the tuned tablas and madal. Performance techniques are stellar.
• Taiko Family: This collection includes taiko drums ranging from huge to small. Many of the sampled instruments came from the collections of Mickey Hart and Remo to create a wide variety of sounds. Others came from the top taiko builders in Japan. They are played both individually and in ensembles. This is the Holy Grail of taiko samples. Finally.
• Woods: In this group you’ll hear unpitched sounds from wooden resonators; tuned chromatic instruments, such as a gourd marimba and a balaphone; the mighty gourd drum, a playable 12 ft. long redwood tree branch and wonderful scraped sounds, such as the Thailand frogs.
