One of our employees just left. And, honestly, I couldn’t be happier. She was offered a position that we couldn’t match. More responsibility, the *perfect* next step for her career. I couldn’t be happier for her. We had an emotional, open conversation and it was absolutely the right decision — and it pained me to the core. Formerly, I desperately hid and covered these moments up. I was embarrassed and afraid of the ripple effects. Note the word “I”. I was embarrassed. I was afraid. I was only thinking of myself and that was the problem. Getting past my own insecurities made me realize that a moment like this is all about them. How I supported them was key to the personal experience we would share. I now subscribe to an open “next-step” employee/manager model. Each employee talks openly about their career “next-step” and we collectively communicate what opportunities we have available or upcoming. Companies are a stepping stone. Our hope as CEOs and leaders is that we can provide dozens of stones for everyone. Sometimes the next stone isn’t available and the right thing is to help them find another mountain to climb. In a world that continues to become more transparent, open and accessible… … our job is to think of others first. #employees #hr #experience
Great post Greg, I've private messaged because I was inspired by the work that you do at Alyce. Can't wait to hear back from you!
Yes, sometimes the opportunity to grow lies elsewhere. We would be doing a disservice holding someone back from his/her full potential if we are not able to provide a role in our own company.
Well said, Greg! Good story. You will not help leaders like you become better and be the best versios of themselves if you keep them in the very place where they are. As mentors and coaches, it is our job to find the next destination in the professional journey of the people who report to us - whether inside the same company or outside. This is real growth - and real leaders are not afraid to lose their precious talents when they know there is a better place waiting for them.
What a great insight Greg! It’s hard to accept those moments at first but helping others reach their potential is the goal!
Wow, this is very powerful and moving. Totally love the part, "our job is to think of others first". Thanks for having the courage to let everyone knows that CEOs are not all after the revenues, they also do care about their people's growth.
