The Visibility Factor: Break Through Your Fears, Stand in Your Own Power and Become the Authentic Leader You Were Meant to Be Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

For decades, people have believed that working hard will be enough to get promoted. While generally true at the entry levels of an organization where performance is an important measure of success, once a more senior level of responsibility is reached, working hard is no longer enough. To continue the journey and move up the ladder, leaders need to create personal visibility for themselves and their teams.

This was the situation that Susan M. Barber found herself in about ten years ago. She was known as someone who would do what it takes to get the job done. While successful, she eventually reached a point in her career where that was no longer adequate. A pivotal feedback conversation with a mentor was the catalyst that changed everything. She had to shift the long-held belief that working hard was sufficient to have career success and find a new way. Creating visibility wasn’t something that was taught in any of the management classes she had taken as a new leader. She was on a path of discovery to learn what visibility meant in general, but more specifically how she could create it in an authentic way for herself.

Barber created a process that helped her build visibility for herself and her team. As a coach now, when her clients are unable to see how they are hiding from their visibility, she uses that same process to help them unlock their potential and achieve success. She has broken down this process down into easy to follow steps.

Working hard only takes you so far. The truth is you need the kind of visibility that allows people to see your value, capabilities and is authentic to who you are.
The Visibility Factor is your guide to shape the visibility that you want for yourself and your career.

I really enjoyed this book! Lots of examples and real life experiences to go along with all the helpful information. Becoming “Visible” isn’t something that is done with a quick fix and I loved that this book broke down all the details and steps it takes to put your plan into action. I’m fairly new in my position and I got excellent career advice from this book, highly recommended!

"The Visibility Factor" is a transformative guide that challenges the traditional notion that hard work alone leads to career advancement. Susan M. Barber's personal journey, catalyzed by crucial feedback from a mentor, unfolds a new perspective on the importance of creating visibility for oneself and one's team. This book is much more than a narrative; it's a practical toolkit, breaking down Barber's process into accessible steps. It's an essential read for anyone looking to enhance their career trajectory in an authentic way. Barber's insights are particularly valuable for those who feel unseen in their professional environment. Her approach helps readers understand how to make their value visible to others, paving the way for recognition and success. This book is not just about being seen; it's about being seen for who you truly are and leveraging that authenticity for professional growth.

Easy to follow workplace visibility tips & great real-life stories make this book easy to read. I don’t know if I kept reading because I wanted to know what happened to the selfish villain- boss OR because the author presented me with easy, solid “visibility” solutions to dealing with my introvert personality. Good choice for those looking for effective yet non-obnoxious (is that a word) ways to get noticed at work. I highly recommend this book, it’s a WIN!

The Visibility Factor is not only an incredibly insightful read on the topic at hand, visibility in the workplace, but a critical message for females whether starting out or seasoned with years of experience. As someone with over 25 years in leadership roles, I read The Visibility Factor to determine if several of my junior team members would benefit (the answer is YES). But what I discovered is that this book is full of insights that were new to me, and in some cases, very validating. The author writes from personal experience with may anecdotes that are relatable and illustrate her message in a simple, thought-provoking way. I ended up buying a copy for my team but also myself and it has become part of our 'women executives' bookclub at work. I will also purchase copies when my daughters join the workforce in the next few years. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I'm from the Midwest, and we grew up on the message that if you work hard, go the "extra mile" at work, you'll get promoted and be successful. So why is it that so many people who are less qualified and don't pull overtime hours get the promotions hard-working folks deserve?

In Barber's book, I learned that in order to get ahead, hard work is still important, but without visibility, many of us will remain stuck. She calls it "the visibility factor," and in her book she talks opening about her own challenges with it in her corporate career and the plan she created to become more visible in a way that fit her values and personality. She also shares stories from the clients she coaches on this very topic. Barber gets it, and she also has a practical, proven way to gain the visibility WE deserve. Loved this book!

Although I am not normally a fan of "self-help" books, I found this to be practical, action-oriented and very clear. It is not just theoretical but also gets into the details and specificity to be very helpful.
