Netflix Co-Founder, Entrepreneur, Mentor & Investor

Exactly 25 years ago today - on April 14th, 1998, at 8am in the morning, Eric Meyer leaned forward, tapped a few keys on his laptop, and launched Netflix to the world. That first day was a long one. We crashed our servers. Ran out of mailing labels. Scrambled to get everything to the post office in time. But we ended that day with 200 customers. Today, Netflix has more than 200 million of them. Starting with a dozen people squeezed into a tiny office with dirty green carpet, Netflix now has more than 10,000 employees. It has customers in nearly every country in the world. It produces it’s own movies. It makes it own television shows. It’s brought the world “Netflix and Chill”. (And I promise, I never saw that last one coming). 25 years ago, we simply believed there “had to be a better way” to rent movies, but along the way we ended up not just changing the way the world consumes content, but how that content is created. We started out just wanting to enjoy work, and ended up showing it was possible to build a culture based on radical honesty, freedom and responsibility. But looking back, I know it could have gone very differently. - What if the DVD had gone the way of the LaserDisc? (Don’t know what a LaserDisc is? My point exactly!) - What if Reed and I had accepted Amazon’s offer? - What if Blockbuster had said yes to our $50 million ask? I can point to hundreds of other forks in the road that may have made the difference between success and failure. Each of them reminds me of the importance that luck plays in every success story. (And the role that survivor bias has in the fact that I’m the one telling it). Speaking of luck, what about the people? Would any of this have happened without the right startup team? Without Christina Kish? Te Smith? Jim Cook? Eric Meyer? Mitch Lowe? Where would Netflix be if PureAtria had not acquired Integrity QA; the lucky break that resulted in me sharing an office - and a carpool - with a guy named Reed Hastings. And what would have happened had we not stumbled - more than a year and half into our journey - onto the no-due-dates, no late-fees subscription model that ended up saving us? It’s been an amazing ride, and at the beginning, all I wanted to do was start a company that sold something on the internet. I ended up with so much more than that. As Netflix closes out it’s first 25 years - and hopefully kicks off it’s next hundred - I’ve never been prouder of what Netflix has become. And I’m proud of everything that we accomplished. We started out wanting to solve an interesting problem, and ended up proving that a handful of people with a crazy idea and a bit of determination can change the world. But I’m proudest of the fact that I didn’t listen when everyone - and I mean everyone - told me “That Will Never Work”.

We need a netflix movie

Personally I don't believe in luck, reason being, the implications that some other force is in charge of your destiny. Having read some of your posts, I see co-creation, you with your dreams, being guided, lead down a path that would ultimately lead you back home. We all are born with this innate ability, and when you want something all the universe conspires, I see all the cooperative components gathered to lead you to that which is. Had you been made aware of what it would have been, you wouldn't have knocked at doors who turned you away which steered you to where it had to be. Our dreams are our future and when we commit to said dreams, they guide along the path. I have enjoyed your recount of a beautiful journey. I loved all of it❤️

Great Story Marc! I can totally relate albeit on a smaller scale. I started GICdirect.com in late 1999 in Victoria, BC, Canada and launched our first website in June 2000. We offered the highest GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificates) rates from a small network of banks, trust co's and credit unions. People in the investment industry said I was crazy to just sell GIC's instead of other investment products. Naturally that created some doubt for me, but based on my research at the time, I knew how big the GIC market in Canada was, and I believed the internet would allow us to reach those people looking for the best GIC rates. In those early days, I knew we were on to something when we recieved a call from the other side of Canada. A gentlman from a small town in Nova Scotia found our website and wanted to purchase one of the GIC's we offered. He was in his 70's at the time! I knew then that if a 70 something year old was using the internet in those early days to find the highest GIC rates, then certainly others would be as well. Turns out, that was exactly the case. We grew the company every year after that. Sometimes you just need that one call or catalyst to keep you going.

Congratulations are in order. However, in this walk down memory lane and “patting thyself on thine own back”, how about recognizing the hundreds and thousands of customers like me who enjoyed walking into a Hastings and looking at movie videos on a wall, but decided to also give this new mail-order video rental a try? After all, we are the ones that made Netflix a succcess. We drove to the nearest postal mailbox and dropped the return package to get the video back to you. We chose to stick with Netflix even though Redbox was at times more convenient. We also decided to add the Netflix subscription as a new household bill while, at that time, still paying a $100+ monthly cable TV service. And we stuck with Netflix during those months when there was “nothing good to watch”, “nothing new to watch”, or “nothing we want to watch” on Netflix! I celebrate Netflix’s success! You are the go to streaming service in my household even though I subscribe to Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Paramount+, and others. I recognize the creativity of Netflix leadership who, in response to the COVID-generated scarcity of new movies/shows, began looking for quality, hit shows in foreign countries and dubbed them to English.

I remember the times when my grandpa and I would get a Netflix movie in the post, watch it as quickly as possible & send them back to get the next movie on his watchlist. It was so fun, almost like a game! It’s truly amazing to see how far Netflix has come since then and how it has transformed the way we consume this type of content. Maybe because I feel so connected to Netflix’s story, is why I have been researching brand loyalty in connection to streaming services & the insights are really amazing: Netflix is predominantly mentioned in regards to loyalty. 💡 (of course there are many more findings, if you’re interested, reach out to me ☺️)

Marc you and your organization's story has been a huge influence in my thinking about our business. in 2007, I launched one of the first live online paramedic programs many, many people told me "that will never work!" they believed you could not educate and train paramedics online! (we do have physical skills training at our school) however, the entire didactic education is delivered online. Today our business has grown exponentially and we are one of the largest programs in the country. We have amazing students who attend our programs from around the globe. Our graduates are impacting and saving lives through education we deliver and the care our students give to their patients. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring those of us with Crazy idea's to disrupt an industry!!
