Putin’s Playbook is urgently essential reading. A former U.S. intelligence specialist who was born and raised in the Soviet Union explains what Vladimir Putin wants and how he plans to get it. Russia’s ruler is following a carefully devised plan to defeat the United States.

Rebekah Koffler came to America as a young woman. After 9/11, she joined the Defense Intelligence Agency, devoting her career to protecting her new country. Now she reveals in chilling detail Putin’s long-range plan—his “playbook”—to weaken and subdue the United States, preparing for the war that he believes is inevitable.

With the insight of a native, Koffler explains how Russians, formed by centuries of war-torn history, understand the world and their national destiny. The collapse of the Soviet empire, which Putin experienced as a vulnerable KGB agent in East Germany, was a catastrophic humiliation. Seeing himself as the modern “Czar Vladimir” of a unique Slavic nation at war with the West, he is determined to restore Russia to its place as a great power.

Koffler’s analysis is enriched by her deeply personal account of her life in the Soviet Union. Devoted to her adopted homeland but concerned about the complacency of her fellow citizens, she appreciates American freedoms as only a survivor of totalitarianism can. An opportunity to view ourselves and the world through the eyes of our adversary,
Putin’s Playbook is a rare and compelling testimony that we ignore at our peril.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Putin’s Playbook—a hard-hitting, very frank inspection of the man and his Russia. Rebekah Koffler brings insight that only a Russian-born analyst could. A page-turner dripping with facts and conclusions that gives us clarity few have attained; a must-read for those who want to understand [Russia and President Putin]….” —GENERAL PHIL BREEDLOVE, USAF (Ret.), seventeenth Supreme Allied Commander Europe

“Putin’s Playbook is an intriguing and informative read for those interested in peeking into the Kremlin’s motivations and wartime strategies. Koffler deliberately warns not to underestimate Russians’ deep-rooted anger over our nation’s moral assertiveness and how Putin’s animosity can escalate into war. A frightening, eye-opening prediction for U.S.-Russian relations, Putin’s Playbook will make readers see the urgency of developing a counterstrategy to the brilliance of Putin’s playbook.” —
NEWT GINGRICH, former Speaker of the House of Representatives

“When the Soviet Union suddenly ceased to exist in 1991, a mortal threat to America appeared to disappear. What didn’t disappear was the ‘counterintelligence state’ that the Bolsheviks created in 1917. In the face of a feckless thirty-year American post-Soviet policy, the hard men of the KGB, successors to the totalitarian secret police, simply expropriated the wealth and remaining power of Russia. Predictably, Putin’s Russia created an American enemy where there was none. With a clear head and the sharp eye of a senior intelligence analyst, Rebekah Koffler details the ominous threat we now face.” —
KENNETH deGRAFFENREID, former senior director of intelligence programs, President Reagan’s National Security Council

An excellent book on US-Russia relations -HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Ms. Koffler did a fantastic job of writing this book - the structure that she weaved throughout the book is very skillful. It's not a book about Putin's ambition only, she started it by narrating how Putin intended to rig the 2016 US Presidential election......However, I do not want to spoil too many details here. As you can see from the attached pic of "Redacted information," then you will get the drift that this is going to be a page-turner. One more thing, as a first-time author, Ms. Koffler wrote this book in layman terms instead of being politically heavy

I found this book to be very informative. Occasionally redundant, but full of information that explains much of what is happening in Putin's Russia and how Russia has attacked the United States over time though ongoing subterfuge. Emphasis on the Russian mind as quite different from the American as a consequence of the vastly different histories of the two populations. This is the thrust of the book, and is essential to understand and predict global events.

Last year I participated in some of Rebekah Koffler's Zoom calls staged to educate people about Vladimir Putin and the Russian threat. I must admit, I was focusing on China and had trouble taking this threat seriously.

Big mistake. With the war on Ukraine, I decided to read Putin's Playbook and was rather shocked with what I read. I knew Putin was aggressive and scrupulous, but did not realize how desperate he is to bring Ukraine back in the Russian sphere, or reestablish the Russian Empire. I did not realize the extent that Russian cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns are damaging American industry and exacerbating divisions in American politics. I did not realize Russia has a new generation of fighters and missiles and anti-satellite weapons that can inflict serious pain on the West, asymmetric warfare or not. I did not realize how dangerous their strategy of managed escalation can be to intimidate Western powers, especially timid politicians like Joe Biden. I did not realize how Putin and many Russians view war with America as inevitable, and as Koffler puts it, see peace as war by other means.

This was an essential book that I hated reading, but had to read. Koffler spices the book up by weaving in the story of her career with the Defense Intelligence Agency, which went brilliantly until a dramatic and unfortunate end....read the book to understand what happened.

And read the book to wise up like I did on Russia and Putin and as a concerned citizen, focus on how America can counter this dangeroous and evil foe.

This was a great read. Notably from a native born Russian who ended up working in the DIA. Great insight into Putin and the current events in Ukraine. I agree with her, we have no business being in Ukraine, but that’s my opinion. The author tends to replicate info back and forth, but that’s probably due this being her first book. One thing I disagree on with her is, there will not be a nuclear kinetic conflict between Russia and the US. MAD still prevales. But cyber is a whole new ballgame. Also, she continues to bad mouth her old employer the DIA. Understand. But flavors her book too much in that arena. But overall, was a good read. Agreed and disagreed with many of her assessments. Putin is truly a product of his generation and upbringing. She is correct, Russians do not think like Americans.

The author joined DIA two years after I retired from that agency. What I found most interesting about her book is how she describes the culture of DIA. The boneheaded bureaucracy, myopia, back stabbing, credit stealing, cronyism and so forth are a real and apparently none of it has changed since I was there. But then, that's bureaucracy for you. I eventually went to NCTC and it was even worse there. As for the Russian threat, this book does a great service in waking the reader up to the reality of what is happening to America. Of course, much of it is of Russian origin (I'm convinced and have made the case that Obama is a mole who was recruited by the KGB and who is now running the Biden administration), but a lot of it is like a virus. Introduce destructive ideas and they spread, especially if they feed off of damaged egos who want to virtue signal. The book goes into great detail on Russian doctrine and how they plan to take us down from within and, if necessary, in a war. It should be required reading in Congress, even though the Marxist Progressive Caucus would probably say it's a Republican hoax. If this country is going to be saved, it will take information like that in this book to be widespread. Some day I'd like to sit down with the author and trade horror stories of life at DIA. Might be fun.

Thanks for telling it like it is. Excellent explanation and point of views from a person
that was born and lived under communism. She has the experience to write and say exactly what is happening in USA. Besides she was an intelligence officer for the USA government. Thanks to her parents advice she migrated to freedom in USA.

After the USSR split apart, I was first in line for tickets to travel all over Russia, as well as the 15 former Satellites. At last, I would talk to the people and maybe get the real picture! So I was drawn to this book because I wanted to get inside the head of Vlad Putin, whom I consider a very evil man, disliked by ALL Americans, including Democrats. Doesn't every red-blooded American want to know Putin's "Secret Plan", to wipe the USA off the map, and what we're up against, especially those of us who grew up in the Fifties? But as my headline might reveal, every time I thought I might be getting the inside scoop on the Prince of Evil & His Dangerous Ways, it was Obama (editor of Harvard Law Review), dangerous, a complete dolt, in contrast to Trump (reality TV star, a genius scholar of International Relations, now our savior). Were all these extraneous musings necessary? Didn't the editor's/advisors give the author a clue that constantly revealing political bias affects credibility? Hopefully, I learned something about Putin and his evil ways, but with credibility so lacking, doubt was constantly creeping in.

Historians and journalist rely on well motivated insiders to understand the great questions of the day. The author is someone who was really there as events unfolded. Unfortunately, many of her conclusions are not substantiated by the facts she brings to bear. At this point in time, the impact of the manipulation of social media by external forces is an open question subject to debate. Her real world experiences will help feed the debate, but by itself her evidence is not conclusive.

I was willing to ignore the author’s mindset because she grew up in Russia; the very reason that she was able to understand, analyse and provide excellent intelligence advice to her adopted country.
To read that she was ejected from her role despite support from her superiors and peers within that intelligence “troika” makes me think that it will be a long time before the US follows the five pieces of advice given in the epilogue to this book.
I have learned a vast amount from this book.
I put up with the repetition in various chapters, the seeing of Trump as a good president simply because he made good military decisions and the author’s inability to see the difference between socialism and communism.
Many democratic countries have socialist benefits for their citizens without any fear of them becoming communist.
