Casting “Away,” a dramedy web series about a sarcastic, uninformed L.A. transplant trying to navigate the reality of being black, queer, and female in a world where those labels are constantly clashing.
We are casting the five main roles:
Nilay Dannon (lead) 22. African American. Queer, wannabe hipster tomboy. Living across the country and away from home (New Jersey) for the first time. Has a shallow take on the world. Determined but unmotivated. Moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a professional photographer. Currently works a restaurant job in the valley. Easily moved by social and political issues but is more of the “watcher” type. She is always documenting.
Duran Whitley- 22. African American. Straight. Geeky. Sporting a consistent sarcastic undertone. Always on hand with a meaningful word of advice or obscure facts often coded in insulting, humorous language. Nilay’s roommate.
Zye Brown- 24. A “stud” who falls on more of the androgynous side. Aspiring DJ. Born and raised in Los Angeles. Reputation of being a player but in reality she falls more in love with love and less with the person it involves. Lives in the moment. Headstrong. Complex family life that she seldom discusses with anyone.
Kyle Flowers- 25. African American. Gay. Handsome and unaware of it. Black Lives Matter lead activist in one of the Los Angeles divisions. Lives out of his car. Makes a small income planning local events. Makes most of his money peddling drugs through West Hollywood. Reads people extremely well. Though very passionate about the activism he’s involved in, he’s insecure about his placement in life.
Gabriella Ruiz- 23. Latina. Straight. Fellow BLM activist. Friends with Kyle. Takes a strong interest in Nilay’s lack of passion for the movement. She is the catalyst to Nilay’s newfound interest in activism for more ways than one. Opinionated. Smart.
We are filming in late June in the Los Angeles area, so open availability around this time is a must.
