[VANESSA – LEAD]
20-35 years old, mixed black / white, light skinned, sad, shy, introverted, harassed and depressed by constant belittling by other characters.
[THICK – LEAD]
20-35 years old, mixed black /white or black, heavyset, loud, brash, opinionated, rude. The ‘I’m too fat’ version of Vanessa.
[OLD – LEAD]
50-70 years old, mixed black / white or black, gray hair, frail. The ‘I’m too old’ version of Vanessa.
[ANXIETY – LEAD]
20-35 years old, mixed black / white or black, frazzled, anxious, ADHD, high-strung. The ‘I can’t do anything right’ version of Vanessa.
[BLACK – LEAD]
20-35 years old, BLACK only, think Black Panthers, afro or dreads, proud, tough, militant. The ‘Black’ version of Vanessa.
[WHITE – LEAD]
20-35 years old, WHITE only, snowflake, entitled, fragile, annoying. The ‘White’ version of Vanessa.
[JEWISH – LEAD]
20-35 years old, Jewish appearance, bookish, nebbish, loud, Yenta-ish, guilt ridden, gregarious, nosy. The ‘Jewish guilt’ version of Vanessa.
STORY LINE: Vanessa is constantly tormented by the voices in her head that tell her she’s too fat, too old, not black enough, too white, not Jewish enough and frightened of everything. These “voices” are all onstage, belittling Vanessa (though she cannot “see” them the audience can). As they convince her to take her own life, she struggles to find her own voice through the chatter of negativity that surrounds her.
