Casting Call – Mesbah Uddin and Cynthia Chatman invite you to audition for “Pastiche”, a 20 minute drama.
An original short film about two people maneuvering the NYC art scene and each other.
Synopsis
Art student, Christine, discovers that her father, Marcus, hasn’t been paying the taxes on their home and that it’s about to go into foreclosure. She hopes to raise money by selling her art, but the market isn’t favorable to a student with no prestige. Through her gallerist friend, Enzo, she meets a well-established artist, Ian. Ian is instantly smitten with Christine and offers to sign his name to her work in order to fetch a high price. Their ruse is successful but Ian’s ego is bruised when Christine’s work is hailed as a breakthrough for him. His agent, Frances, is angry, and Christine doesn’t quite know how to handle Ian’s attraction to her. They’re eventually able to manage their new partnership with caring and mutual respect.
Characters
- Christine, African American, is a senior in college. She’s very talented but has long since abandoned her style to emulate that of Ian.
- Ian, Caucasian, is a middle-aged man who has always questioned his own validity. He’s sincere but insecure.
- Marcus, African American, is Christine’s father, mid 50’s. He suffers from alcoholism and drug addiction. He doesn’t take care of himself or his finances but he’s very protective of his daughter.
- Frances, Caucasian, is Ian’s agent and mother. Mid 60’s or older, she comes across as “strictly business” and has a cold demeanor.
- Enzo – Christine’s friend and gallery owner – upbeat and playful
