Actors for "Out of the Box" Improv auditions in Austin

About Out of the Box
Out of the Box is a revolutionary puzzle-based entertainment company scheduled to open at the beginning of June, 2015. Our flagship location off Hwy 183 and Lamar will provide over 2,000 SF of theatrically designed rooms full of clues and actors to create an unforgettable puzzle experience. Upon arrival, players receive a clue and mission from “Mission Control.” From there, players are free to explore six different, theatrically-staged rooms in search of more clues and puzzles in order to complete their mission.

About the Job
Actors will be paid an hourly rate of $15. Shifts will consist of evening shifts Wednesday to Friday (approximately 4:00 PM to midnight) and both day (11:00 AM to 5:00 PM) and evening (4:00 PM to midnight) shifts on the weekend. We will also occasionally book private buy-outs during the day with at least two week’s notice. We ask that all actors auditioning be available to work for at least four out of the seven shifts. Because Out of the Box is a start-up company, there will be many exciting opportunities for growth as the company grows.

The Cast:

The Host
Charming, seductive, mysterious and aloof, the Host is the first character that players will meet upon arriving to Out of the Box. The Host will facilitate assigning missions for each group of players by having a conversation about their individual expectations and preferences. Throughout gameplay, the Host will offer clues to assist players when they are stumped. This will require a mastery of each mission and sensitivity to the degree of assistance each player needs.

The Merchant
Friendly, approachable (and a little eccentric), the puzzle merchant has traveled the world collecting his favorite puzzles, riddles and brain teasers for the benefit of everyone who comes through his shop. The Merchant offers a handful of clues for each group of players in exchange for a solved puzzle. This character will require a familiarity with approximately 150 puzzles including brain teasers, logic problems, and riddles.

The Mistress of Ceremonies
Flamboyant, quick-witted, and at times a bit catty, the MC is quite the force to be reckoned with! Before any players can receive a clue from the Host at Mission Control, they must draw an “activity card” and perform on stage! This character will require a sharp sense of humor to keep players entertained and energy up. If this character is played by a male (which is most likely), the actor will be dressed in drag.

The Puzzle Hop
Although the Puzzle Hop’s nationality is unknown, his accent makes it clear that he’s definitely not from anywhere around here! Eccentric and animated, the Puzzle Hop zips through the entire complex making sure that players don’t break items and resets puzzles and clues once players have completed their mission.

The Librarian
Old , ornery and senile, the Librarian is quite the curmudgeon – and rightfully so! She survived an apocalypse and was charged with the safekeeping of the world’s last remaining library. Well, that’s what she’ll tell you anyway (she’s not quite lucid anymore.) She may have a few screws loose but when it comes to symbols and cryptology, she’s as sharp as a tack. This character will facilitate many riddle- and symbol-based puzzles for players.

The Wizard
If you think the Librarian is off her rocker, the Wizard is down-right loony! Not much is known about the Wizard’s history – mostly because he likes to spin a fanciful (and often hard to believe) story. Despite being several centuries old (according to him), the Wizard is quite spry and full of energy. The Wizard is also quite the percussionist – banging around on pots and pans as he tells his tales.
