Depot Dora: Stolen Masterpieces and Hidden Treasures Paperback – July 5, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
Depot Dora is about an Austrian, facing a Nazi firing squad, escapes and returns to his native village as a covert agent in order to save the Mona Lisa.
Lucas Brunn has been waiting for a chance to defend his homeland ever since the Nazis aryanized the Vienna Medical School and expelled everyone without a German birth certificate. When the Resistance finally assigns him a mission, however, it isn't what he expects: Lucas is to disguise himself as a priest, steal into a Nazi controlled salt mine where wooden crates are stored, and identify the contents. His fear turns to shock when he opens a small crate and finds himself face-to-face with the Mona Lisa. Lucas hides the masterpiece, stabbing a Wehrmacht guard in the process, but his mission is far from over. There are thousands of paintings to recover and a more personal battle to fight -- the Nazis, after discovering Lucas's identity, kill his father and arrest Erika, his fiancee. Depot Dora tells the true story of Operation Ebensburg, a WWII mission, the events of which have been depicted inThe Monuments Men and Where Eagles Dare. At turns enthralling and romantic, the novel will inspire you to think about how far you'd go to protect your country and the people you love."

From the Author
Nazi thieves stored the world's largest treasure trove of art masterpieces in Depot Dora, Hitler's code name for the salt mine at Altaussee. Hitler issued his Nero's decree, ordering destruction of the salt mine and its precious contents.
Gaiswinkler and the Austrian Resistance blew up the mine entrance, saving the art inside, including the Mona Lisa.
The French government and Louvre officials deny that the Mona Lisa was ever in Nazi hands. Records of the SOE, however, confirm that da Vinci's masterpiece was indeed in Depot Dora and was saved along with the rest of the art.
In 1986 I interviewed Josef Grafl, radio operator for Operation Ebensburg, at his home in Bad Aussee. A man of short stature, he welcomed me. "Come in, would you like a beer?"
Many of the events of Depot Dora are attributed to this Austrian hero. He did complain that his country "never paid us, not even a new suit of clothes. Friends in my village did not like my helping the English. When I walked into a bar the talking stopped, and they said, 'Here is the Englander.'" He and Gaiswinkler had little to do with each other after the war, although they were neighbors.
The image of a German swastika appears at the top of each page of a new chapter. However, the first pages of chapters 31, 32, and 33 are headed by an image of the Austrian Coat of Arms, signifying regained Austrian freedom.
From the Inside Flap
December 10, 1944. Heavily armed Nazi convoys delivered eight coffin-sized wooden crates to Depot Dora, Hitler's code name for the salt mine at Altaussee, Austria. The arduous 360-kilometer trip from Neuschwanstein Castle over mountainous, icy roads had been simple compared to the steep grade of the snow-covered mud track leading up to the salt mine.
Once there, the Wehrmacht soldiers unloaded the crates onto small motor-driven carts on a narrow-gauge railroad that took them deep into the multi-chambered mine.
The crates were deposited into the Mineral Cabinet, a cavernous rock-walled room line don all sides by lumber scaffolding that held smaller crates of Nazi-confiscated masterpieces from museums, cathedrals, and mansions all over Europe. Near the end of World War II, a total of 6,577 masterpieces, including theMonaLisa, were saved by an Austrian patriot, Lucas Brunn.

The story built around a World War II situation was a thriller I couldn’t put down. The characters became very real and meaningful. This was important inasmuch as their objective was achieved and is beneficial to all people interested in preserving famous art.
This book should certainly be the basis of a big screen opportunity. The majority of people in the USA were not alive to hear of these brave ordinary citizens who made a difference to all of us. My thanks to Cy Vaughn who heard of the saga, then researched, chronicled, and wrote the book.
Heart," kept me reading throughout the night. Depot Dora has not only done the same, but provided further education regarding the devastation of
World War II. His writing is succinct, crisply offering the reader the ability to envision every sentence.
A tad of love interest adds a romantic twist to a most thrilling unraveling of events.
