From the Author

Depot Dora is based on a heroic British World War II mission:Operation Ebensburg. In June 1944, Austrian patriot Albrecht Gaiswinkler defected from the Wehrmacht (German Army) to the Maquis (French Resistance). The British Special Operations Executive (SOE) called him to London to train as a covert agent. On April 8, 1945, he parachuted into the Altaussee area and quickly organized a large force of Austrian Resistance fighters. They captured a number of high-ranking Nazi officers, including Ernst Kaltenbrunner, who were retreating to their alpine redoubt in the forest above Altaussee.

Nazi thieves stored the world's largest treasure trove of art masterpieces in Depot Dora, Hitler's code name for the salt mine at Altaussee. Hitler issued his Nero's decree, ordering destruction of the salt mine and its precious contents.

Gaiswinkler and the Austrian Resistance blew up the mine entrance, saving the art inside, including the
Mona Lisa.

The French government and Louvre officials deny that the Mona Lisa was ever in Nazi hands. Records of the SOE, however, confirm that da Vinci's masterpiece was indeed in Depot Dora and was saved along with the rest of the art.
In 1986
I interviewed Josef Grafl, radio operator for Operation Ebensburg, at his home in Bad Aussee. A man of short stature, he welcomed me. "Come in, would you like a beer?"

Many of the events of Depot Dora are attributed to this Austrian hero. He did complain that his country "never paid us, not even a new suit of clothes. Friends in my village did not like my helping the English. When I walked into a bar the talking stopped, and they said, 'Here is the Englander.'" He and Gaiswinkler had little to do with each other after the war, although they were neighbors.
The image of a German swastika appears at the top of each page of a new chapter. However, the first pages of chapters 31, 32, and 33 are headed by an image of the Austrian Coat of Arms, signifying regained Austrian freedom.

From the Inside Flap

Altaussee, Austria

December 10, 1944. Heavily armed Nazi convoys delivered eight coffin-sized wooden crates to Depot Dora, Hitler's code name for the salt mine at Altaussee, Austria. The arduous 360-kilometer trip from Neuschwanstein Castle over mountainous, icy roads had been simple compared to the steep grade of the snow-covered mud track leading up to the salt mine.

Once there, the Wehrmacht soldiers unloaded the crates onto small motor-driven carts on a narrow-gauge railroad that took them deep into the multi-chambered mine.

The crates were deposited into the Mineral Cabinet, a cavernous rock-walled room line don all sides by
lumber scaffolding that held smaller crates of Nazi-confiscated masterpieces from museums, cathedrals, and mansions all over Europe. Near the end of World War II, a total of 6,577 masterpieces, including theMonaLisa, were saved by an Austrian patriot, Lucas Brunn.
