Yesterday at McDonald’s I was having a quiet contemplative cup of coffee and a toastie (great value for just three dollars). I noticed a large crowd of people had assembled and were chatting over coffee. They were members of the Porsche club having a bit of a get together… at Maccas over coffee on a Sunday morning for heaven’s sake!

Doesn’t that sort of club meet at night or once a year for a Concours d’Elégance?

A mate of mine has been the chairman of the local branch of his political party for a few years. He got sick and tired of trying to drag members into coming to evening night meetings of the branch.

Suddenly, he had a brainwave!

He now has his branch meeting over coffee on a Saturday morning commencing at 10:30 for an hour or so at a local club. One of their parliamentarians has a chat with the crowd for a half hour, answers questions and then everybody networks.

Whereas he had to struggle to get a few members to attend evening meetings now 150 members happily cram through the doors.

So, what’s the point of these two events?

Well, quite simply, society is changing, and once upon a time people were more than happy to go out to meetings and seminars at night time.

Nowadays, when time is at a premium, endeavouring to crowbar people out of their homes in the evening is extremely difficult to do. Yet people love to meet over coffee and do so at almost any time of the day.

So, if you’re in a service club struggling to get members to come to meetings or want to hold a seminar of some type, try doing it over coffee. Choose a time when people would normally have a coffee… that’s maybe early in the morning, over lunch, late afternoon or even at the weekend.

If you run any sort of meeting or seminar there’s not much point trying to run them on traditional lines at traditional times when nobody wants to come. Find the time and the place to suit them and you’ll maximise your results.

P.S. Even funerals are being held at night time… more people attend and, released from time pressures, are much more relaxed celebrating the life of the deceased.
