More and more I am convinced that business today is been conducted mainly in absentia, in other words virtually by email, message or social media. And that’s a real shame because you’ll always get a much better result when you can get face-to-face or belly-to-belly. We are losing the fine art of conversation.

How often have you found yourself messaging or emailing somebody who is in the next office or just down the road? You get quicker responses and better results if you bother to get off your butt and go talk to them. Of course, it’s important to learn not to be someone who will steal too much of their time but balance the business with the right amount of socialisation.

I was reminded of this when I saw a photo (which I won’t put up because I might breach copyright) where a whole family of six or so people were visiting grandma. Unfortunately, all of them, except grandma, were staring at their phones. No conversation and poor old grandma was sitting there staring blankly into space.

Learn to put your phone away occasionally or, at least, more often than you do now!
