As I slowly sink into senility I’m losing my reluctance to initiate conversations with people I don’t know. I find that I’m doing it with lots and lots of people in all sorts of situations, walking their dog, waiting on tables, serving in a shop, travelling on a train, or just sitting across from me in a restaurant.

And I find that when I make pleasant overtures it really does generate fantastic results.

Whether they respond with extra service, a detailed explanation, go the extra mile or just a smile it’s great when they return my vibe. It’s wonderful to make a positive difference to their day and it certainly it adds lustre to mine!

Some years ago my wife and I were holidaying on the Gold Coast and every morning we went for walk along the beautiful beach. Most people went past us trying to avoid looking at us (and we’re really not that bad to look at!) invariably with a grim face.

We decided to smile at everybody as they went past. And it was simply amazing! We got smiles in return and even some “Hellos“.

They do say, don’t they, “Give out a smile and you’ll often get one back”?

And it’ll make your day!
