My great mate The Hospitality Doctor and Melbourne Cup Expert, Max Hitchins, sent me this little gem and it’d be funny if it weren’t so sad. But then, without wishing to exaggerate, there are millions of people who don’t understand how to network. You see them standing around all by themselves or talking to friends and colleagues at networking functions.

“Some people don’t understand how to Network. I put this message on Linked In with a tip about remembering names.

Hello Alex. We are connected on LinkedIn and I thought this information might be useful to help you remember names.

Memory Tip 1. Ever forgotten a name less than three seconds after you have been introduced?

Try this idea. As soon as you meet someone and you hear their name ask them to ‘spell’ their name. This will give you some ‘breathing space’ to focus on the name and try to commit it to memory.

Alex (a manager with a SYDNEY Hotel group) sent me this reply.

Max,

Please don’t send me these types of messages. I’m on here for networking purposes, not to be spammed with sales.

Thank you

Poor Alex. Some people don’t understand good networking is about helping people and ‘earning the right’ to do business with them. I would have thought a hotel manager would be interested in any tip to remember names. Ummmm…. Max H”
