As soon as you can, I want you to take time out to indulge yourself with a great glass of French champagne or whatever you imbibe when you want to seriously spoil yourself. As you sip your drink, take some time to do some thinking.

Some serious, very serious, thinking about what you’d like to achieve next year. It’s important that you invest some time on this because as my great mate Doug Malouf says, “If nothing changes, nothing changes.”

And, since the end of the year is just around the corner, it’s a great time to start planning for the year ahead. To ensure your plan gets the careful preparation and consideration it deserves here are some thought starters to help you get your plan on paper and into action.

  • Think about the things you were going to do throughout the year but didn’t. Ask yourself why you didn’t and what it would have meant if you had?
  • Reflect on those things you did do and shouldn’t have done. Did doing them achieve positive results and would you do them again?
  • Compare the results you were hoping to achieve with what you actually got. Are you happy with them? Why or why not?
  • Ask yourself what are you going to do next year that’s special, unique or different compared to what you’ve been doing previously.
  • Check off the marvelous and innovative things you did during the year that you’d like to repeat or improve upon.
  • Review how you’re going to spend more time working on the business rather than in the business.
  • Decide what are the key factors that get results for your business and commit to work hard on them.

Remember, pretty poor planning produces pathetically poor results. By reflecting on your results this year and putting in the planning time for next year, you’ll almost certainly guarantee you and your business a great New Year. So right now, take the time to do the planning that will ensure you get the business you’ve always dreamed about.
