ISIS Video Shows Airdropped U.S. Weapons Falling Into Militant Hands

A masked fighter shows off a cache of weapons, including grenades, in a new video. They appeared to be part of a supply drop meant for Kurdish fighters.

Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) fighters intercepted a cache of weapons dropped by a U.S.-led coalition against the terrorist group, the Associated Press reported.

The roughly two-minute video shows a masked man armed with a rifle going through boxes of hand grenades, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and ammunition, the AP reported.

The cache was part of Monday's airdrop that aimed to provide weapons and supplies to Kurdish militia members fighting ISIS in the town of Kobani on the Syrian border, the AP said.

According to the Pentagon, 27 of 28 pallets of arms were dropped by Air Force planes to Kurdish fighters in Kobani.

U.S. Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said the weapons were similar to what the U.S. had dropped, and it was possible ISIS had intercepted one of the drops.

"We are very confident that the vast majority of the bundles did end up in the right hands," he said. "In fact, we're only aware of one bundle that did not."

The Wall Street Journal reported the parachute of the GPS-guided package malfunctioned during the drop, causing it to drift from its target.

The accidental drop of the weapons cache prompted thank-yous from ISIS supporters on Twitter. The loss was more of an embarrassment than a strategic problem for the U.S., the AP reported. ISIS already controls millions of dollars worth of weapons left behind by fleeing Iraqi soldiers.
