Build a Yurt!

Build a Yurt Workshop

Local Living Ventures group in Canton, New York

The group has brought me in to teach a 3-day workshop where we will install a 20′ yurt for the members of the group whilst concurrently building a 10′ yurt from scratch to encourage students to build their own. Yurt building, camping, food, art projects, and long term off-grid living discussion will all be present for this weekend of camaraderie!

Come help make this thing happen! You will learn about the history, uses and realistic expectations for yurt living, and “how-to” build one yourself!

There are lots of projects that need helping hands – planning, building, decorating (beautiful arts project for Mongolian designs!) and much more.

Join us to create beautiful, sustainable, and move-able housing we can all love!

A full weekend of camaraderie, Date To Be Announced. It will be late in May

Construction Supervisor is master yurt builder Steve Reed of Surely Yurts

  1. As nice as the Yurt maybe, I prefer something a little more on the traditional look when it comes to the tiny house movement.

  2. Since we are on the subject of yurts, Habitat For Humanity, West Hawaii has partnered with Yurts of Hawaii and author, Jen McGeehan, to bring yurts into the Habitat family of dwellings. The Yurt Project is now launched, with plans to build in 2015 after all the funds have been raised. 3. I really like the idea of a yurt workshop. I think that would be pretty helpful for a lot of people. I know this was posted a few years back but I’m wondering if it’s something that happens regularly.

I bought a yurt kit a couple of years ago from simpleterra.com/yurt-kits/ for my mountain property. Best investment. I added a snow insulation kit to it for the winter months as we go up there year round. It took me a bit to setup, a workshop would have been helpful as there were a lot of things that I didn’t think about at first.

I found out about the pros of a wooden deck after I’d already set it up. I ended up building one and reassembled the kit on top of the deck. I found out about insulation kits after the fact, so I also added that to it. I added a wood burning stove for warmth and to cook on. I’m almost to the point where it has all the modern conveniences added to it.
