These shoes either have shoelaces or “buckles.” Shoelaces are very dangerous when they come undone. I know at least one woman who was seriously injured when a shoelace caught between her chain and chainwheel. On my only shoes with buckles, a buckle failed, and the replacement was no better. It was many years ago, I’ll admit. Since then I’ve only worn shoes with three Velcro straps. Quicker, safer!
The PI Ex Alp Drift II does not hold up well. I used it 48 days on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, then another 7 weeks on the Baja Divide. About 1/2 way through the Baja Divide, one of the purple lace eyelets ripped, therefore not allowing an even pulling of the laces. Also, the toggle on the laces does not stay tight. It is necessary to tie a knot at the base of the toggle so the laces don’t come loose. Pearl Izumi needs to reinforce the lace eyelets, particularly the ones that don’t have the zig zag stitching. Near the end of Baja, another lace eyelet was almost torn through on the other shoe. There is no way to fix the shoe, so I threw them away before coming home.
