A Medicinal Spring Smoothie

You’ll put some zing in your spring with this Smoothie.  Coriander (and other greens) are jumping out of the ground.  Then in contrast to the vitality of greens the medicinal roots and bulbs i.e. garlic, ginger and turmeric are also abundantly available.     At the same time our immune systems can become overwhelmed with the pathogens that are also in full swing.   Nature is wonderful at providing us with the foods we need at the right time.   This recipe is my smoothie of the moment.   It supports our immune and detox systems and is wonderfully medicinal.   I add in herbs to help with healing the gut at the same time e.g. liquorice and slippery elm – just add what you have available and your body needs.

Greens fresh from the garden, italian parsley, kale, coriander, broccoli florets & flowers

Preparation:  5 minutes

Serves:  1

A Medicinal Spring Smoothie
Ingredients:

 

  • Handful of seasonal fruit (e.g.organic strawberries, pineapple, apple or pear)
  • 2 handfuls of seasonal greens and herbs e.g. coriander, parsley, english spinach, dandelion or kale etc. (preferably some or all out of the garden)
  • 1 desert spoon of coconut oil
  • a good wedge of lemon (pips removed, skin left on)
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • approx. 1cm piece of fresh turmeric
  • approx. 1cm piece of fresh ginger
  • 1/4 tsp licorice root (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp slippery elm (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp organic gelatin powder
  • pinch of good quality salt
  • a pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups of filtered water
  • 1/4 cup of ice

Directions:

Add all the ingredients into a high speed blender and blend on high for approx. 1 minute.  Enjoy!

Notes

There are so many other healing foods to add in to boost your nutrition e.g a raw egg, bone stock, vanilla powder or alkalising cayenne pepper.  Add in whatever you have on hand & if you’re worried about the taste, don’t be, the spices, lemon and / or sweeteners work magic.
